HOUSTON HISTORY
This was the first inaugural Screwfest to honor the late and great
Robert Earl Davis Jr. aka DJ Screw after he passed away in the 2000's.
It was a slightly rainy overcast day on July 22, 2006. Many in the city were still mourning the death of John Edward Hawkins - Big Hawk - H.A.W.K. from just a few months before. Many Hometown Houston Heroes showed up in support, everyone from Slim Thug, Lil Keke, Lil Flip, Chingo Bling, and many more. After the outdoor stage got rained out, the SLABS in the carshow stopped poppin trunk and showing bang, as fans and artists alike both made way to the inside of the Pasadena Convention Center.
Trae The Truth takes stage and performs his hit Swang. I remember HAWK's verse comes up, the beat stops, and everyone is just yelling as they recite his verse.
"I would give my last breath if I could bring you back
Bring Screw back, matter fact, bring the whole crew back
Only God can do that, so I'ma leave it alone"
I was only a teenager at the time, but that was the first time in my life I saw grown men do 2 things in public, both light up one and cry. RIP Screw, Fat Pat, H.A.W.K., Mello, Big Moe, Big Steve, Pokey, Pimp C
"The results of D.J. Screw's labors often sound like rap records played underwater on an old cassette deck that's running out of batteries and needs its tape heads cleaned. It is not music to dance to but music to lose yourself in, as if it is the last sound echoing in your head as you drift off to sleep."
