There are plenty of celebrities who have been outed as Steelers fans — but very few flaunt their black-and-gold bona fides with as much flamboyance as Snoop Dogg.
The rapper/actor/icon knows football, and is a regular presence at Steelers games, both home and away. It's probably a good bet that he has better seats at Heinz Field than almost anyone not named Rooney. And he's almost sure to be in town today for the Steelers' home opener at Heinz Field.
But Snoop didn't get where he is by taking it easy. In fact, he's got a gig lined up for the short time he'll be in town — in the aptly named Mr. Small's Theatre in Millvale. Sure, it's a small venue for a guy who probably could headline at Mellon Arena, but it's a very nice one. The main selling point for the converted church, apparently, was the backstage area, says Mr. Small's booking agent Brendan Pester, of Opus One Productions.
"It basically came down to him looking at the various venues and how they're laid out," Pester says. "In particular, he saw the courtyard that's outside of our backstage area, (which was once) the priest's rectory house."
It's a safe bet that Snoop and his entourage don't hang out in church rectories much. Needless to say, you're not getting backstage, even if you claim to know Dr. Dre.
"We had to reduce our capacity (650 people) to accommodate his guest list," Pester says. "So we knocked that down to 600 for this show, just because of his 'posse.'"
Mr. Small's usually tends to host more up-and-coming or niche artists, but the venue is no stranger to big stars. Fall Out Boy has performed there, and the Black Eyed Peas and 50 Cent have used the in-house recording studio. This is the biggest-selling act to perform at the venue, however, with the most expensive cover charge.
The Snoopadelics are Snoop's backing band. Doors open at 9 p.m., but don't expect him to hit the stage until at least 11 p.m.
Snoop Dogg took a little time out of his schedule to answer some e-mailed questions from the Trib. The answers are all straight from the Dogg's mouth.
